About this event
For the second time, the LWVNC has partnered with the North Carolina Network for Fair, Safe, and Secure Elections for a series of Town Halls across the state to engage voters on the subject of election security and voting access. With recent changes in voting laws and rules, voters are confused, and we at the LWV are supporting nonpartisan voter education like never before!
The Carter Center, the organization founded 40 years ago by President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, is also a co-sponsor of the Trusted Elections tour. The Carter Center seeks to strengthen democratic principles and voting practices wherever those values are threatened. Originally these threats were primarily overseas, but now the research finds increasingly intense partisanship and misinformation here at home. With recent changes in district lines, voting rules, and continued media coverage of election deniers and skeptics, the average NC voter is worried about knowing how to vote and whether their ballot will count.
Recent surveys also indicate a heightened risk for election related violence in North Carolina, along with several other battleground states. The North Carolina Trusted Elections Tour is a bipartisan effort led by Robert Orr, a former Republican justice of the state Supreme Court, and Jennifer Roberts, former mayor of Charlotte and a Democrat, to help restore trust and confidence in our election process so that it remains peaceful and our election workers are free from threats and harassment.
The Charlotte town hall is one of 28 across North Carolina’s cities, with one additional statewide online event. This will also be an opportunity to raise awareness of the LWV website Vote411.
