Civics 101: Investing in Democracy at the Local Level

Civics 101 is a flagship initiative of the League of Women Voters of Charlotte Mecklenburg that equips residents with the knowledge and confidence to engage in (and with) local and state government. Through seven interactive sessions led by public officials, participants learn how systems work and how to make them work better. The program has a proven track record: alumni have gone on to serve on city councils, advisory boards, and civic commissions.  Since 1995 the Civics 101 program has offered a high-impact opportunity to advance civic education, leadership development, and inclusive participation.

Environment & Sustainability: Protecting Our Children’s Future

The League’s Environment & Sustainability program helps residents protect natural resources and advocates for fair, science-based policies. The program addresses issues like clean water, plastic pollution, and climate resilience in underserved areas through education, partnerships, and events such as cleanups and forums. These efforts increase the League’s influence on local decisions regarding public health and environmental justice.

Public Education: Committed to Well Educated Citizens

The League of Women Voters supports strong public education as vital to a healthy democracy. The League works to increase awareness of education issues and advocates for more K–12 funding, better teacher salaries and retention, and inclusive policies. Key activities include community presentations, public forums, observing and speaking at board meetings, meeting with elected officials to advocate for change, and collaborating with other non-partisan groups.

Voter Services: Nonpartisan Voter Education and Registration

Voting supports democracy, and informed voters act in their best interests. The League offers impartial information on candidates and issues, including ballot referendums, at public events and through the VOTE411 website. We provide voter registration assistance year-round at hundreds of local events to ensure eligible citizens are registered, know important dates, and bring required identification. Additional efforts include postcard campaigns, candidate forums, and public discussions on local issues.

Women’s Healthcare & Reproductive Rights: A Women’s Right to Access

The League supports access to quality healthcare for all women, including bodily autonomy, privacy, reproductive health, contraception, and abortion. We advocate for individuals’ rights to make private reproductive decisions. The League collaborates with nonpartisan groups to educate the community on policy changes and ways to make their voices heard. Our advocacy includes contacting elected officials, organizing outreach events, and partnering with like-minded organizations.
