The League of Women Voters supports strong public education as vital to a healthy democracy. The League works to increase awareness of education issues and advocates for more K–12 funding, better teacher salaries and retention, and inclusive policies. Key activities include community presentations, public forums, observing and speaking at board meetings, meeting with elected officials to advocate for change, and collaborating with other non-partisan groups.

Our Focus

The Public Education Team works to raise awareness, advocate, and educate Charlotte metro residents about the overall status of public education in Mecklenburg County as well as in North Carolina. The Team's goals are:
  • Advocate for effective and adequate funding for public education.
  • Advocate for educational equity which will close achievement gaps.
  • Advocate for increased teacher pay and other factors that will improve teacher retention and recruitment.
  • Increase public awareness of the issues impacting public education at the state and local level including building coalitions of allied organizations that share our goals.
Meetings: the first Wednesday each month. Check the Event Calendar for exact day each month.

Join the Education Action Team and Collaborate with others to support public education.

Take Action for School Funding:
Sign the North Carolina Community Resolves

We cannot allow our public schools to fall further behind. The North Carolina Community Resolves
is a call to action in support of our public schools, marking the 250th anniversary of the historic 1775 Resolves. This modern call to action highlights the chronic underfunding of NC public education and urges immediate change.

What's at Stake:

  • NC ranks 43rd in teacher salaries.
  • NC ranks 50th in per-student spending.
  • Funding is threatened by state income tax cuts and diversion of funds to private school vouchers.
In North Carolina, it is the state government's responsibility, led by the NC Legislature, to provide sufficient and reliable funding so that all students, in all counties have equal access to certified teachers, suitable classroom resources and up-to-date facilities.

The NC Legislature needs to hear from us!
