May Book Club
To kick off National Pride Month, we will examine not one, but two books relating to LGBTQ+ history!
PRIDE: Celebrating Diversity & Community
by Robin Stevenson, is an overview of Pride including what it is, how it came to be, and who celebrates it. Geared toward a younger audience, it is a quick read and a great resource for those outside of the community who need an introduction, and for those inside the community who are unfamiliar with the history of Pride. It was a 2017 Stonewall Book Award Nominee for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.
THE BOOK OF PRIDE: LGTBQ Heroes Who Changed the World
by Mason Funk captures the story of the gay rights movement from the 1960s to the present, through in-depth interviews with leaders, activists, and those who witnessed the movement and made it happen. We hear accounts from individuals who fought battles both personal and political, often without the support of family or friends, and frequently faced the threat of violence and persecution. By shining a light on these remarkable stories of bravery and determination,
THE BOOK OF PRIDE
not only honors an important chapter in American history, but also empowers young people today (both LGBTQ and straight) to discover their own courage in order to create positive change.
